How to create a living room that is stylish and functional
How to design a living room that is both stylish and functional
Your living room should be a place to relax and unwind, spend time with family, entertain guests, and sometimes even double as a workspace.
So it’s no surprise I’m often asked: “How can one room do all of that?”
If your living room isn’t working, it’s usually down to a few common issues:
- Poor furniture placement
- Incorrect furniture size
- Too many focal points
- Inadequate lighting
- A space designed for looks rather than the people who use it
The good news? Every one of these can be fixed.
This guide will help you create a living room layout that functions beautifully for your lifestyle and looks amazing too.
Layout
You may have heard the “rule” of never placing furniture against the wall. In reality, this only works if you have enough space to pull pieces inward.
That said, pushing everything against the walls and leaving a vast empty space in the middle can make a room feel disconnected and uncomfortable.
A well-placed rug, coffee table, and side tables help anchor the space and create balance. Consider bringing accent chairs and plants into the room rather than lining the perimeter, this makes the layout feel intentional.
Just remember: allow clear pathways so people can move around easily. A calm living room should never feel like an obstacle course.
Choosing the right size furniture
This is one of the most common problems I see:
- Sofas that overwhelm the room or block doorways
- Coffee tables that are too large or too small to be useful
- Rugs that “float” awkwardly in the centre of the floor
A rug should be large enough for the front legs of the sofa and any accent chairs to sit on it. This visually connects the furniture and makes the room feel grounded.
Choosing the right sized coffee table
Your coffee table quietly sets the tone for how the space feels and functions. It should be practical for drinks and look intentional.
Shape, size and style need to be considered. If you are looking to buy a coffee table, my blog ‘How to choose a coffee table for your living room’ may be of help; LINK
Focal point
If you have too many focal points it creates visual overwhelm and prevents the room from feeling calm.
A typical focal point is the first thing you notice when you enter the room, such as a fireplace, artwork, or styled shelving. If you want other focal elements, keep them subtle and minimal so the room doesn’t feel cluttered or confusing.
Lighting
One ceiling light is not enough, no matter how beautiful it is.
A well-designed living room uses layered lighting:
- Wall lights for ambient glow
- Table lamps for warmth and intimacy
- Floor lamps for task lighting and atmosphere
Lighting is what transforms a room from functional to inviting.
A family friendly living room that still looks beautiful
We’ve all seen stunning interiors on Pinterest, social media and in magazines, but do they actually work for your lifestyle?
If you have children, pets, or a busy household, consider:
- Durable, easy-care materials
- Practical furniture placement
- Colours that are forgiving of daily wear
Storage.
Everyday items, such remotes, toys, throws, paperwork all need a home. Without adequate storage, even the most beautiful room will never feel calm.
Prioritise storage before the “pretty” finishing touches.
The finishing touches
To make your living room feel complete and inviting, don’t overlook the finishing touch such as window treatments, texture and personal touches.
I believe that a good window treatment finishes a room, providing privacy whilst adding a touch of softness.
Add texture through cushions and throws. This is also where you can add colour or pattern to a space if you don’t want to overdo it.
And don’t forget to add personal touches, items you love, artwork, books or objects. Make the space YOUR home.
