A coffee table is more than just a space filler.
A coffee table isn’t just there to fill a gap in the room. It quietly sets the tone for how your living space feels, so choosing The right one matters more than you might think.
The right coffee table helps your living room feel complete. It introduces shape, texture and personality, while also serving a practical purpose, somewhere to place your drink, a book, or even your laptop.
GETTING THE POSITION RIGHT
Placement is key.
Your coffee table should sit close enough to the sofa to reach comfortably, but not so close that it restricts movement. You should be able to walk around it easily without disrupting the natural flow of the room.
If you’re using a rug, make sure the table sits comfortably on it. This creates a more intentional, styled look and prevents the space from feeling disconnected.
CHOOSHING THE RIGHT SHAPE AND SIZE
The shape and scale of your coffee table should reflect both your room size and your furniture.
Smaller living rooms: Round or oval tables work beautifully. They soften the look of the space and help it feel more open, while improving movement around the room.
Large or corner sofas: Opt for a more substantial table to balance the scale. Alternatively, consider a nest of tables. These offer flexibility, keep them together for a compact look or spread them out when you need more surface space.
Scale is important. A small table in front of a large sofa will feel lost, while an oversized table in a compact room will overwhelm the space.
CONSIDERING YOUR LIFESTYLE
Your lifestyle should influence your choice just as much as aesthetics.
For family homes with children or pets, look for:
Rounded edges
Stable, sturdy bases
Easy-to-clean materials (glass can quickly become high maintenance)
If practicality is your priority, an ottoman may be a better option than a traditional coffee table.
For entertaining: A structured coffee table offers stability for drinks and serving pieces.
For relaxing: An ottoman is ideal if you like to put your feet up. Simply add a tray when serving drinks to create a stable surface.
The best choice is one that supports how you actually live in the space.
STYLING YOUR COFFEE TABLE
A coffee table should never become a dumping ground, but it shouldn’t look bare either.
Styling is what elevates it.
Start with a simple formula:
Books for height and layering
A candle for warmth
A vase or decorative object for shape
Style in odd numbers and vary the heights and textures to create interest. Keep it intentional, not cluttered.
FINAL THOUGHT
The best coffee table is one that balances beauty and function. It should suit your space, reflect your style, and support your everyday life.
