Finding your interior Style

Struggling to decide on your interior style? You’re not alone! Many people face this challenge, which can lead to a home that doesn’t feel quite right and even costly mistakes. The good news is, I’m here to help you discover a style you’ll love.

Start with One Room

Don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to tackle your entire home at once. Start small. Choose one room to focus on—it’s much easier this way, and the rest will naturally follow.

Step 1: Define the Feeling

Ask yourself: How do I want to feel in this room?
Write down all the words that come to mind. Maybe it’s cosy and relaxing, or vibrant and energizing. Keep these words handy—they’ll guide you through the next steps.

Step 2: Gather Inspiration

This is the fun part!
Use sites like Pinterest to create a collection of inspirational images. Search for rooms that reflect the feelings you wrote down earlier (e.g., cosy living room or elegant bedroom).

Save the images that catch your eye—the ones that make you stop scrolling.
Here’s a tip: When you click on an image in Pinterest, scroll down to see similar suggestions. This can help you refine your vision and discover more options with the same feel. Once you’ve gathered a good selection of images, it’s time to review your collection.

Step 3: Find Your Style

Look at your saved images. What patterns or themes stand out?
Ask yourself:

  • What is it about this image that I like?
  • Is there a dominant colour palette?
  • Are the furniture styles similar?
  • What specific elements draw you in—textures, accessories, or overall layouts?

It’s okay if your looks are all over the place at first. If you feel overwhelmed, try dividing your images into two broad categories:

  • Modern: Clean lines, sleek furniture, minimal accessories.
  • Traditional: Rich details, bold fabrics, and heavier furniture.

If you find yourself liking elements of both, don’t worry—mixing styles is perfectly fine! I would recommend sticking to two primary styles and follow the 70/30 rule: make one style the dominant focus, and use the other as an accent.

Step 4: Make It Practical

Now, consider if your chosen style will work in your home and align with your lifestyle.

For example:

  • Do you love light-coloured sofas but have pets or young children?
  • Does your home’s architecture suit the style you’re leaning towards?

Don’t be afraid to change your mind as you go. If any images no longer work for you, remove them from your collection. This process is all about refining your vision—it’s normal for your preferences to evolve.

Take Your Time

Creating your dream home takes time, but it’s worth the effort. A space that reflects your style and feels just right will bring so much joy to your everyday life.
