Happy New Year! Can I still say that?
We are a couple of weeks in now, but if you’re new here, then yes… Happy New Year and welcome.
This time of year is full of “New Year, New You” messaging. And that can feel overwhelming. I don’t think everything needs to be new. Sometimes a simple refresh, of you or your home, is more than enough.
As an interior designer, I love a full re-decorate, but I also know that January isn’t always the moment for big projects. Budgets are tighter, energy is lower, and sometimes the goal is simply to reset and move forward feeling good in your space.
The bigger decisions can be made at a later date.
The good news? A few small changes can make your home feel fresher, calmer, and more intentional, without a renovation or major spend.
Once the Christmas decorations come down, I always give the house a good clean, then step back and really look at each room. I move things around, tweak layouts, and re-style surfaces. (This is usually when my husband quietly disappears.) That small reset makes a bigger difference than you may expect.
Here are some easy ways to refresh your home for 2026:
1. Declutter (without overwhelm)
Obvious, yes, it’s very powerful. You don’t need a full clear-out. Choose one room and aim to remove just 5–10 items.
Ask yourself:
• Do I actually love this?
• Do I still use it?
• Why am I keeping it?
If letting go feels hard, box items up and store them out of sight. If you haven’t missed them after a set time, it’s a clear sign they can go. Less visual noise instantly makes a space feel calmer.
2. Rearrange your furniture
Before buying anything new, try moving what you already have. A sofa on a different wall, a bed repositioned, or a side table relocated can completely change how a room functions and feels.
3. Refresh your artwork
If your walls haven’t changed in years, this is an easy win.
• Print photos from a favourite trip
• Frame wallpaper or material samples
• Use landscape or nature photography
• Or simply swap artwork between rooms
A small change here can make a space feel brand new.
4. Update soft furnishings
New cushion covers or a throw can instantly lift a room. It’s one of the fastest ways to introduce texture or a new colour direction without commitment. Old throws can be donated, so nothing goes to waste.
5. Tidy (or add) plants
Plants make a home feel lived-in and welcoming. Real or faux – both work.
If you already have plants, they may just need a prune, a repot, or a good feed. A little attention goes a long way.
6. Restyle your accessories
Sometimes it’s not about buying more – just styling better. Group items in odd numbers, vary heights, and think in loose triangles. Even subtle adjustments can refresh the room.
7. Update your lighting
This is the step most people forget. Swap out harsh bulbs for warmer tones, add a table or floor lamp, or simply change lamp shades. Good lighting makes everything feel more intentional and comfortable.
8. Introduce a new scent
Clear out old candles or dusty diffusers and choose a scent that makes you feel relaxed. Think spa, hotel, or a holiday memory. Scent is powerful. It sets the mood the moment you walk in.
A refreshed home has a way of resetting you too.
